Haryana applauds Government's decision to duspend Wrestling Federation of India

Geeta Phogat, a Commonwealth gold medalist and Olympian, expressed her satisfaction with the sports ministry's decision to suspend the newly elected body of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). According to her, this move brings a renewed sense of hope for justice among wrestlers.

Calls for transparency: Wrestlers and Officials urge further action

Following the suspension of the WFI body, Haryana wrestlers, coaches, and traditional councils known as "khaps" are urging the government to extend its actions to suspend state wrestling bodies. Somveer Kadian, a Commonwealth medallist, emphasized the need for fairness and transparency, urging the government to suspend all state wrestling federations.

Sakshi Malik’s father-in-law, Satywan Kadian, also a wrestler, called for the inclusion of at least one woman in the new WFI body. He highlighted concerns about the outgoing WFI president, Sanjay Singh, being under the control of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Allegations were made that decisions, such as organizing wrestling matches in Uttar Pradesh, were met with opposition from budding wrestlers.

Government intervention and concerns of dominance

Dronacharya awardee Mahavir Singh suggested that the government should take control of federations in other sports to ensure fairness. He raised concerns about Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh's dominance in wrestling and pointed out instances of arrogance on social media platforms.

Phogat Khap, in a meeting held in Charkhi, welcomed the government's decision to suspend the WFI body. Khap president Balwant Nambardar advocated for the appointment of a wrestler as the WFI president and the inclusion of a woman in the panel, emphasizing the importance of gender representation in sports leadership.
